葬儀までの間、彼の遺体はサン・ピエトロ大聖堂に安置され、一般弔問が行なわれた。この大聖堂は歴代教皇の多くが埋葬されてきた場所だが、フランシスコ教皇はその伝統を打ち破り、葬儀後にローマ市内のサンタ・マリア・マッジョーレ大聖堂に埋葬された。

ローマ教皇フランシスがイースター・マンデー（4月21日）に死去したとバチカンが発表した。葬儀は4月26日（土、現地時間）、バチカンのサンピエトロ大聖堂前の広場で執り行われる。ローマ教皇の葬儀について、すべてをまとめた。
